The county was formed in 1851 and named for James Madison. Madison County (451 square miles) is located deep in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. Much of the county's terrain is rugged, heavily forested, and sparsely populated. The county's northern border is with Tennessee. The French Broad River flows through Marshall and the resort town of Hot Springs in the county.
